Probation Introduction Why are some students more successful than others? Over time successful students have understood the need to develop excellent learning abilities and engage in successful learning strategies. Unfortunately, some students struggle through short or long-term academic difficulty during their college education and end up on Academic Probation. Whatever the situation, fortunately there are resources and opportunities to help students overcome academic difficulties. A Definition for Academic Probation A definition for academic probation differs from school to school. Generally, if a student's work is far below expected potential, the student may be placed on Academic Probation. A student on Academic Probation must take steps to satisfy approved conditions concerning behavior, preparation, assignments, attendance or grades. These conditions vary according to student needs and abilities and institutional requirements. If a student has demonstrated significant improvement after a period of time, a student may be removed Academic Probation. Otherwise, if conditions are not met, students may be dismissed. Improving Opportunties for Successful Learning Today's students face many more challenges than any other previous group of students. In the age of the information highway, the ability to read, write and comprehend increasingly complex materials is vital for academic success. It is important to explore effective approaches for helping students become more successful. For students on academic probation, one of the four most important steps to take are to: learn about their individual academic situation, identify areas of strengths and weakness, seek academic and career advise, and develop a plan to return to good academic standing in subsequent semesters. What does it take to succeed as a learner? To be successful, students must have basic knowledge about their ability, commitment and readiness to learn. Self-assessment offers learners opportunities for increased involvement, greater acceptance of the learning process, and alignment with expectations.
